5 Tips to Spot a Well-Maintained Vehicle

Buying a used vehicle can be exciting but it’s important to know what you’re really getting. A well-maintained vehicle can last for years and save you money on repairs down the road. Here are 5 things to check before you buy, and what they can tell you about the vehicle’s history and care.

1. The Safety Inspection Report

Take a close look at the safety inspection. If it lists a long list of required repairs or replacements, that may mean the vehicle wasn’t maintained as regularly as it should have been. Every vehicle will eventually need new brakes, rotors, and other wear-and-tear items, but when several components need replacing all at once, that’s a sign of neglect rather than normal aging.

2. The CarFax Report

A detailed CarFax report is a great way to understand how a vehicle has been cared for. In many cases, a long record of service visits is a good sign, it means the owner brought it in regularly for maintenance.
Keep in mind, though, not every repair or oil change shows up on CarFax. Some owners do their own work (especially mechanics), while others take their vehicles to small local shops that don’t report to CarFax. Still, overall, a longer and more consistent CarFax history usually indicates attentive ownership.

3. Rust and Corrosion

In Manitoba, rust is common due to winter roads and salt. Check wheel wells, door bottoms, panel corners, rocker panels, underbody, and around fenders and bumpers. A little surface rust on older vehicles is normal, but extensive rust or bubbling paint is a warning sign. Minimal rust usually indicates the vehicle was washed regularly and well cared for.

4. Interior Condition

A clean interior often reflects a careful owner. Check seats, carpets, pedals, and controls for wear or stains, and notice any lingering odors. A well-kept, fresh-smelling interior suggests the vehicle has been treated with care.

5. General Driving Feel

During a test drive, pay attention to vibrations, noises, and handling. Steering should be responsive, brakes smooth, and suspension absorb bumps quietly. We personally drive every vehicle we purchase to ensure a smooth, quiet, and comfortable ride, which indicates proper maintenance.

Taking the time to carefully inspect a used vehicle can save you both money and headaches down the road. By reviewing the safety inspection, checking the CarFax report, looking for rust, assessing the interior, and taking the car for a test drive, you get a clear picture of how well the vehicle has been cared for. Paying attention to these details not only helps you make a smarter purchase but also ensures you drive away with a vehicle that is safe, reliable, and enjoyable for years to come.
